So many flavors, so many potential meltdowns! Turns out, this “tyranny of choice” applies to adults too, especially when creating photo books. We THINK we want endless customization, but often, it just leads to frustration and abandoned projects.
In psychology, this is called Choice Overload, and in UX design, it translates to Decision Fatigue. Too many options can paralyze users, making them less likely to complete a task.
My experience with Albumaid’s professional photography product highlighted this perfectly. Initially, we offered a wide array of design options, customization features, and image selection tools. But our data revealed that the more choices we gave, the longer it took users to approve designs.
This led us to a radical simplification for our kindergarten product. By drastically reducing the number of features and streamlining the design approval process, we achieve an amazing design approval rate resulting in over 3,500 approved album designs within weeks!
Now, with our new B2C product, Albumaid Easy, we’re taking this “less is more” approach to the next level. We’re minimizing choices, automating design, and focusing on a frictionless experience.
